Staunton, VA - The 2016-17 Hollins basketball season started with a trip to Mary Baldwin. A slow start didn't stop Hollins from winning her season opener for the first time since 2009, 58-44.
The home team got their season off to a quick start while Hollins seemed stuck in place. After a 5-0 Squirrel start, Jewellanna Parfitt scored her first basket of the season to cut the deficit to 4-5. However, Hollins would get no closer as Mary Baldwin ended the quarter on a 10-2 spurt to take a nine point lead, 15-6. The second frame saw Hollins begin to gain some momentum. The hosts scored to make the lead 11 before Hollins began to get back into the matchup. Parfitt, Gaibriella Gilbert, and Porsha Waddey each scored to cut the Squirrel's lead to five. Parfitt then proceeded to fit five straight from the free throw stripe to tie the game, 17-17. Hollins finished the second period on a 4-0 run to take the lead into the break, 23-19.
The second 20 minutes saw Hollins began to slowly pull away from Mary Baldwin and with 2:08 left in the quarter, the road team pushed their advantage to 10 points. Leading 38-30 going into the fourth, Hollins scored the first seven points of the period, pushing their lead to 15. The Hollins defense took over, giving up just 44 points on the night, to secure their first win of the new season, 58-44.
Parfitt inched closer to the 1,000 point mark by leading the way with 15 points to go with eight rebounds, three assists, five steals, and a pair of blocked shots. The senior guard now sits at 955 points for her career. Sally Sroge hit six of her 13 attempts for 12 points while adding four boards. Nicolette Valencia had 10 points, six rebounds, three assists, and five steals with Deana Campbell adding 10 points and seven rebounds. Hollins enjoyed a 10 rebound advantage with LaChrisha Hill coming off the bench to grab a team high 10 caroms while Waddey secured eight.
Kaitlyn Crews was the only Mary Baldwin player to reach double figures with 13 points and four rebounds.
