J-Term Spotlight: Lacrosse Team

At Hollins, students have the opportunity in between semesters during January Term (J-Term for short) to take part in an internship, a course that involves traveling, or take a seminar class on campus they might not normally take during the fall and spring semesters.

Student-athletes at Hollins University take part in the J-Term semester and Hollins athletics is highlighting a few of the amazing experiences our student athletes partake in. Today's highlight is on two members from the lacrosse team. Valerie Heflin and Mara Smith.

Valerie Heflin '19 is majoring in communication studies. This J-Term Valerie interned with Virginia Amateur Sports, Inc (VAS). Based in downtown Roanoke, the VAS is a non-profit organization whose mission is to 'promote awareness and benefits of physical fitness and healthy lifestyles through sports, education, training and competition.' In addition to numerous events throughout the year, Virginia Amateur Sports, Inc. directs the Virginia Commonwealth Games in Lynchburg, VA.

About her internship, Valerie said, "Interning in sports event planning is so fun because it's a different way of transferring my love of sports and I get to learn more about online marketing."

Mara Smith, a biology major from the class of 2019 spent her J-Term at Merritt's Creek Veterinary Hospital in Barboursville, West Virginia. She interned with Dr. Jacqueline Chevalier and was listed as a volunteer technician. The vet hospital has been in business for 10 years and provides healthcare for a variety of different animals.

Of her time at the Merritt's Creek Veterinary Hospital Mara says that she was with, "large and small animals and did everything that a veterinary technician is responsible for. I guess you could say this is the happiest I've ever been and I can't wait to achieve my goals and get to working."

Thank you to Valerie and Mara for sharing your J-Term experiences and Go Green!
