J-Term Spotlight: Golf Team

J-Term Spotlight: Golf Team

At Hollins, students have the opportunity in between semesters during January Term (J-Term for short) to take part in an internship, a course that involves traveling, or take a seminar class on campus they might not normally take during the fall and spring semesters.

Student-athletes at Hollins University take part in the J-Term semester and Hollins athletics is highlighting a few of the amazing experiences our student athletes partake in. Today's highlight is on three members from the golf team. Amber Markovitz, Ya Gao and Shelby Estes.

Amber Markovitz is a member of the 2017 graduating class. Amber is majoring in Business with a financial track and minoring in Economics and Mathematics. This J-Term, Amber is interning at Emerald Creek Capital in New York City. Emerald Creek Capital is a real estate financing firm based in Manhattan.

Amber says she is, "Learning a lot about real estate and connecting my finance courses to the real estate world. I am also learning a lot about excel, which will help me once I graduate and get a job."

Ya Gao, a second year (2019) Biology major, went to the Caribbean with other biology students for J-Term. The expedition was led by Professors Renee Godard and Morgan Wilson. Ya's Caribbean J-Term experience included collecting coral data from 11 different bays and beach cleanup.

Of her trip, Ya says, "My favorite part was definitely the night snorkeling. I saw a giant sea turtle and dog snapper and so many things which you will never see during daytime snorkeling. We also did the night hike without a flashlight, completely silent, we went to the top of the mountain and enjoyed the sun rise. It was an amazing experience I never had before.  I was tired every day because our schedule was so tight. We did things in 10 days which is supposed to be done in 30 days. I really enjoyed the time we spent together with my adorable teammates. The Caribbean is a really amazing place. I wish I could come back again next semester."

Shelby Estes is a senior (2017) Business major with a concentration in Finance.  Her internship is at the Business Development Office of National Dance Institute (NDI) in New York City. The National Dance Institute was founded in 1976 by New York City Ballet principal dancer Jacques d'Amboise. Regardless of a student's background or socio-economic status and through the use of dance and music, NDI looks to instill a love of the arts for their students. 'Since its founding, NDI has impacted the lives of over two million children…free of charge.' (www.nationaldance.org/about.htm)

Of her J-Term internship experience Shelby states, "I'm part of  the team that is tasked with paying for this program. The work I've done so far includes writing and submitting grants, research, and helping to plan events. My internship has been wonderful and I'm thankful to be part of such an amazing organization! This internship has also taught me a lot; in the way of professional skills and in the fact that I'm more confident that this is the field I want to be in after graduation. Both the internship and living in NYC for a month have been a great experience, and I'm indebted to Hollins for it all."

Thank you to Amber, Ya and Shelby for sharing your J-Term experiences and Go Green!
